Patriots No. 3 pick trade talks get doused with cold water ahead of 2024 NFL Draft

The New England Patriots are armed with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and they have a very big decision on their hands. They could either draft their quarterback of the future, with Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J.J. McCarthy being the top options, or they could trade down from the pick and acquire a massive haul of picks and players in exchange for the No. 3 overall pick.

It may seem like an easy decision for New England to draft the best available quarterback, but Eliot Wolf is keeping his options open as he heads into his first draft as the leader of the Pats front office. Despite the team’s insistence on listening to trade offers, though, it sounds like the Pats aren’t seriously considering trading the pick as of right now because of how bad the offers they have received so far have been.

“According to one source, the Patriots have fielded calls and trade offers for their first-round pick. However, the source indicated that those offers were ‘laughable’ and not close to getting the Patriots to move down. As of now, the team is still waiting for a ‘serious’ offer. A second source stated that he wasn’t sure that such an offer exists or that another team would be willing to put together an unprecedented package to move the Patriots off the No. 3 pick.” – Mark Daniels & Karen Guregian, MassLive

After the team ended their Mac Jones experiment and traded him to the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this offseason, it’s clear that New England needs a new quarterback. They have several other big areas of need, though, with wide receiver and their left tackle spot being glaringly depleted currently, so it’s fair to wonder whether the team would be better off trading down and picking up several more picks to help them address these needs.

The problem for teams looking to trade for this pick is that it’s going to require a mammoth haul in order for New England to even consider moving off of it. They need a new quarterback too, so if it’s not something that they view as worth their while, there’s no sense in pulling off a trade they are 100 percent in love with when they can just stay put and draft their quarterback of the future.

It’s a tough line for Wolf to have to walk in his first draft in charge of the Patriots front office, but it’s good to know that he isn’t going to pull off any sort of trade involving the third overall pick unless he gets a massive return. Of course, the alternative decision is to simply draft one of the top passers in this draft, and if you ask many fans, that is likely their best move regardless of what they could potentially get in return if they were to move this pick.
